Just as the clock was ticking down and everyone was preparing for extra minutes, the Golden Eagles stunned all at Pattison Field with the game-winning goal in the final two seconds of the game. The goal gave University of Minnesota Crookston its first win of the season to improve to 1-6-1, 1-3-1 NSIC while the Upper Iowa women's soccer team falls to 1-7, 0-5 NSIC.
Tied at 0-0 with just over thirty seconds to play, Laura Murray played a ball to Haley Ramberg that put her in prime position for the Peacocks to win the game, but the opportunity was stopped abruptly on a close offsides call. Seconds later on the opposite side of the field, the Golden Eagles played a ball over the top that took a few hops and found Maggee Hodgdon one-on-one with Natalie Rudrud. Rudrud came out to meet the ball on the bounce, but Hodgdon was able to slip past the keeper with the ball and drive the winning goal into the back of the unguarded net with two seconds left on the clock.
The Peacocks took five shots in the beginning stages of the first period as part of their offensive effort that outshot the Golden Eagles 6-1 going into the break. Maida Alijagic and Victoria Sanchez were both aggressive for the Peacocks in the first half as Sanchez recorded a season-high three shots (one on goal) and Alijagic took two shots. The Golden Eagles' lone shot of the period came from Lindsey Daml in the final nine seconds that was scooped by Rudrud.
Still knotted at zero, the first half of the second period saw each team exchange three shots and two saves. Athena DiMario Done recorded saves on shot attempts from Aimee Sies and Mayte Van Hees, and Rudrud shut down shots from Hodgdon and Vanessa Shelton.
The final ten minutes of action showed intensity by the Golden Eagles to earn their first win of the season. UMC outshot the Peacocks 5-1, but defensive efforts led by Molly Doran and Kelsey Hall limited only two of those to be on goal. Rudrud came up with a big save in the 87th minute that eventually led to Ramberg's opportunity before it was cut short. Hodgon's game winning goal came in the 89th minute and marked her third goal of the season.
UIU held the advantage in shots (11), saves (4), corner kicks (4) and fouls (17).
