Peacocks Fight to Big Win Over Lindenwood in First MIAA Contest of the Season

The Peacock’s men’s soccer team improved to 2-2-2 after a dramatic 2-1 win over Lindenwood University.

The Peacock's men's soccer team improved to 2-2-2 after a dramatic 2-1 win over Lindenwood University. The match was tied up until the 88th minute when Marko Cirko drove home a penalty kick for the game winner. Sunday's game was Upper Iowa's first MIAA competition of the year and the win marks their first victory over Lindenwood since the 2015 season.

Upper Iowa once again created a number of promising scoring opportunities throughout the match. In the 21st minute Seth Russell was on the receiving end of a beautiful cross from Tate Lofdahl that he was able to chest down and fire a volley that rang the crossbar. The Peacocks continued to apply the pressure and in the 29th minute Italo Martins Soares lifted a beautiful shot over the top of the Lindenwood goalkeeper for a very well deserved first goal of the season.

The Lions would level the score at one goal a piece in the 75th minute following a Lindenwood corner kick. Lindenwood's set piece carried to the far post to Andrei Ciot who fired a shot that Peacock goalkeeper Nikolai Gogol was able to deflect. Unfortunately for the Peacocks, Lindenwood's Gaspar Alvarez was there to put in the deflected shot to tie the game.

The two sides continued to battle with both teams seeing a few more scoring chances. In the 88th minute the Peacocks pressured the Lions' back line and Martins Soares made a great run in the box and drew the late penalty. Senior Marko Cirko stepped to the spot and slid his shot past the diving Lindenwood keeper for the game-winner and his first goal on the year. The Peacocks would hold on for the 2-1 victory with Gogol coming up with four saves on the day.

The Peacocks will return to action on Friday afternoon when they square off against MIAA opponent Southwest Baptist University at 3pm. Upper Iowa will cap off their home stand in another MIAA tilt against Northeastern State Sunday at 11pm. As always both games can be viewed at uiupeacocks.com/live and will also be broadcast on KCRG TV 9.3 for the match against Southwest Baptist and KCRG 9.2 against Northeastern State.
