The duo of Allyson Smith and Rachael Norton each scored a pair of goals as Bemidji State University rolled to a 5-1 win over Upper Iowa University on a breezy Friday afternoon at Pattison Field.
The Peacocks' (1-6, 0-4 NSIC) lone score came off a converted penalty kick by
Maida Alijagic in the 44
th minute after BSU was called for a handball in the box. Upper Iowa saw a season-high 11 shots in the loss led by Alijagic with three and
Haley Ramberg with two.
The undefeated Beavers (7-0, 4-0 NSIC) used four unanswered goals in the first 18 minutes of play to put the game out of reach. Alanna Mattson gave Smith a long cross in the box to get on the board in the 4
th minute of action with a goal from 12 yards out. Four minutes later, Mattson tried giving Norton a look, but Smith was the player to put it away, cashing in on the rebound from Norton.
Norton capitalized on another chance to score in the 10
th minute after a defensive mishandle in the box by UIU allowed an easy shot from ten yards out. Dani Nelson added to the scoring efforts in the 18
th minute, converting on a free kick that curved into the goal from 30 yards out.
The Peacocks were able to regroup midway through the first period and build up some offense through the midfield. Following the score by Nelson, UIU outshot the Beavers 6-3 to finish the first half of play. Back-to-back corners by
Aimee Sies gave
Kelsey Hall and
Mayte Van Hees a couple looks for the Peacocks. The Beavers were called for a handball on Van Hees' shot which gave Alijagic the penalty kick opportunity. Alijagic's attempt was successful to cut into BSU's lead, 4-1.
Norton answered back in the 67
th minute with a successful penalty kick for BSU to mark her second goal of the game and seventh this season. The Beavers limited the Peacocks to only two shots in the second period to take the 5-1 road victory and increase their winning streak to seven games.
Natalie Rudrud and
Liz Tank split time behind the line and combined for five saves.
