The Upper Iowa women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Washburn University in the final game of the Peacock Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods outshot the Peacocks 20-5 in the win to improve to 2-0 overall, while Upper Iowa evens it's record at 1-1.
The first period was all defense for Upper Iowa as Washburn was able to keep the ball on their end and produce 13 shots. Goalkeeper Natalie Rudrud continued her good start for the Peacocks coming up with a big save on a WU penalty kick in the 15th minute. Along with Rudrud, senior Mayte Van Hees stepped up on defense to help keep the Ichabods off the board in the first period.
Coming out of the half, Washburn was able to get on the board in the 57th minute when Mackenzie Heiman took a through ball from Tera Lynch off the rebound and past Rudrud for the lone score of the game.
For the second straight game, Upper Iowa kept the advantage on corner kicks after a 5-3 edge in today's contest. Rudrud finished the day with 10 saves.
The Peacocks open up Northern Sun conference play on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. when Winona State University comes to town. The Peacocks and the Warriors finished last year's match with a 0-0 draw.
