A pair of second half goals gave Winona State University the NSIC-opener victory as the Peacocks fell 2-0 on Thursday afternoon. Winona State improves to 1-0 while Upper Iowa falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Northern Sun.
Despite being outshot 15-1 in the first half, Upper Iowa was able to create a few opportunities which threatened the Warrior's defense. The Peacocks biggest threat came from
Haley Ramberg who found herself in a one-on-one situation that was ended short by Jourdan Valkner coming off her line and smothering Ramberg's ball.
The Peacock defense was able to hold the Warriors without a score in the first half.
Natalie Rudrud came up with a couple massive saves for UIU in its defensive effort, including turning away Abby Bohanski's penalty kick attempt in the 31
st minute.
Rudrud's perfect streak defending penalty kicks this season came to a close early in the second half. The goalie was able to get a hand on Melissa Greco's attempt, but the kick was too hard and the ball found the back corner of the net to give the Warriors a 1-0 advantage. Shortly after, Georgette Topalis took a piece from Mariah Northrop in the 52
nd minute for an insurance tally and the final score of the match.
Maida Alijagic led the Peacock offense with three shots while Rudrud posted a season-high 12 saves.
Upper Iowa rounds out non-conference play on Sunday when Truman State University makes a visit to Pattison Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
