Upper Iowa and Sioux Falls played their double header in Plattsmouth, Neb. on Friday. The Peacocks claimed game one 3-0 thanks to the top of the order and UIU starter
Ryan Munoz. In the second game, the Cougars broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning to claim a 5-3 win and split the double header with UIU. At the end of the day, Upper Iowa was 8-14 overall and 6-10 in the NSIC, while Sioux Falls moved to 9-21 and 9-11 in the conference.
Upper Iowa will look to host Wayne State College on Tuesday, Apr. 17 before taking off for Crookston, Minn. for a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 21-22.
Game One: Upper Iowa 3 - Sioux Falls 0
UIU's sophomore starter
Ryan Munoz was the story in game one. Munoz threw a complete game, shutout allowing just 4 hits to the Cougars, while striking out 7 batters. The win improved the hurler's record to 2-1 on the season.
The Peacocks notched runs in the first, third and fifth innings to claim their 3-0 win.
Tony Salato,
Zac Cain and
Jacob Greco all had two hits apiece in the first, second and third spots in the lineup. Greco homered in the first for UIU's initial run and Cain singled in Salato in the third. UIU's final run of the game came in the fifth when Cain singled to center and the ball was mishandled by the Cougar defense allowing a run to score.
Game Two: Sioux Falls 5 - Upper Iowa 3
Sioux Falls built a 3-0 lead in the middle innings fueled by a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning. Upper Iowa tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the top of the seventh.
Emmett Kulick led off the sixth inning with a single to right and advanced to third when
Callahan Seehase singled to left. A pair of sac flies by Salato and Cain allowed both runners to score and cut the deficit to just one run. The Peacocks tied the game in the seventh inning when
Riley Braughton hit a sac fly out to the infield.
With the score tied at 3-3, the Cougars scored the eventual winning runs in the eighth inning. A pair of bunts mishandled by the Peacocks led to Sioux Falls' success in the eighth frame. A two-run single before the first out of the inning gave the Cougars the runs they needed to win.
Kolton Gonnerman (2-3) suffered the loss after throwing 7 innings and allowing 5 runs, 4 earned, on 8 hits while striking out nine batters.
