It took the whole weekend and then some, but the Peacocks and Huskies of St. Cloud State University finally got to finish game one and play games two and three of their weekend set. The two teams packed up after an 11-inning game that was suspended due to lack of light on Sunday, and moved down to Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex on Mount Mercy University's campus. The teams finished the extra-inning game one, and then played the final two games to end the series. St. Cloud State earned the win in game one, and after the Peacocks awoke with 10 runs to win game two, the Huskies mounted a comeback to steal game three to take a pair of games. After the three final scores, Upper Iowa now sits at 3-6 on the season, and 1-2 to start NSIC play.
UIU will have a day off before hosting the Hawks of Quincy University in a non-conference doubleheader at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette on Wednesday, March 21. Game one is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
Game 1: 12th Inning Recap - SCSU 8 - UIU 5 (Game Tied 5-5 after 11 innings in Fayette)
The Huskies scored three runs on two hits and a Peacock throwing error. St. Cloud State had runners on second and third with no outs when Caeden Harris tripled to left center and Matthew Meyer followed with a sacrifice fly to give SCSU an 8-5 lead.
Emmett Kulick walked with one out in the bottom of the inning for UIU; the junior stole second and moved to third on a grounder, but one final grounder ended the game.
Nathan Strobel (1-1) picked up the win for St. Cloud State, while Kyle Boser (1) posted the three outs in the twelfth for a save.
Tanner Poor (0-1) suffered the loss allowing the three runs to score in his 1.1 innings.
Game 2: UIU 10 - SCSU 5
Jacob Greco got the scoring started for the Peacocks in game two off Boser, who continued on the mound to open the second game. The redshirt senior launched a long solo home run to left field in the first inning to lead 1-0, and UIU added to the lead an inning later. With runners at first and third,
Dalton Steere reached first on a fielder's choice to avoid a double play, and
Conner Klostermann scored on the play to push the Peacock lead to 2-0.
The Huskies had an answer, however, in the top of the third against UIU starter
Ryan Munoz. The sophomore gave up a pair of runs on a single and a wild pitch, and all of a sudden, the game was tied. St. Cloud State then took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning with a pair of run-scoring singles to lead 4-2, and it appeared as though Munoz was in some trouble. However, the southpaw got out of the inning to keep the Peacocks within striking distance.
In the home half of the fourth, the Peacock offense turned it on. Emmitt Kulick, who hit a pinch hit solo home run in game one Sunday, ripped an rbi-single to left to cut the deficit to 4-3, and moments later,
Dominic Hillesheim stepped up and laced what looked like a single to left field. However, the ball took a UIU bounce, and went over the left fielder's head and rolled to the fence, scoring two runs on the double. UIU was not done on offense. In the fifth inning, Klostermann scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-4. An inning later, the bats were rolling as UIU tallied five hits, including four doubles to score four runs, claiming a 10-4 advantage. UIU would hold on behind a complete-game win for Munoz, and the Peacocks earned their third-ever win over St. Cloud State.
Game 3: SCSU 5 - UIU 4
It was the Peacocks again who scored first in the final game of the series, taking a 2-0 in the opening inning. A pair of wild pitches by St. Cloud State starter Aaron Hammann scored the runs, and then the pitcher took over the game. Upper Iowa's
Kolton Gonnerman was brilliant through the first five innings, facing just 16 batters in that span. The four-batter second inning was the most the first-year Peacock faced in his second outing of the season.
Leading 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, the Huskies put a rally together. SCSU sent all nine batters to the plate, and scored five times on three hits and an error. Gonnerman finished the inning, but was now in jeopardy of suffering his first loss of the season. UIU answered in the home half of the sixth with a pair of runs on rbi-singles by Klostermann and
Brenden Butler, but trailing 5-4 in the last of the seventh, they needed one more rally. SCSU closer Nathan Strobel nailed down the save to complete the comeback win for the visitors.
