Baseball to Open NSIC Play with Huskies on Sunday and Monday

Upper Iowa will host the Huskies of St. Cloud State University this weekend at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette. The Peacocks (2-4) and the Huskies (7-5) will meet four times on Sunday and Monday, Mar. 18-19 to open their Northern Sun Conference seasons.

This Week in Peacock Baseball... Upper Iowa will host the Huskies of St. Cloud State University this weekend at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette. The Peacocks (2-4) and the Huskies (7-5) will meet four times on Sunday and Monday, Mar. 18-19 to open their Northern Sun Conference seasons.

Get Him to the "Grec"... Redshirt senior Jacob Greco is in his final season with the Peacocks. The outfielder is hitting .400 after the first six games of the season with 8 hits including a pair of doubles, a triple and a homer. He leads the team with 4 runs and 4 rbi.

Strong Starts on the Hill... A pair of Peacock starters have earned the team's two wins on the mound. Senior Kolton Gonnerman threw a complete game with 7 innings against Missouri S&T allowing just one run in UIU's 2-1 victory over the Miners. Freshman Colin Lacey started the second game of UIU's season-opening, double header against Bemidji State at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Lacey threw 6 innings allowing 2 runs in the team's 3-2 win. The pair have combined to strikeout 8 batters.

Scouting the Huskies... St. Cloud State is coming off of a 3-4 week in the Tucson Invitational Games that included wins over conference opponents, Northern State and Southwest Minnesota State. The Huskies have not played since last Thursday when they closed out their Tucson trip with an 11-4 victory over Olivet Nazarene. Caeden Harris is currently third in the NSIC in hits (22) and fifth in both batting average (.500) and slugging percentage (.773). Harris' 22 hits are the eighth most nationally as well. Jackson Goplen is fourth in the NSIC in both hits (20) and RBI's (15) while Mitch Mallek is third in the conference in doubles (5) and sacrifice flies (2). Isaac Matchinsky is third in the conference in walks with 9. Shannon Ahern is currently leading the NSIC in wins with three in four appearances out of the Huskies' bullpen. Ahern is averaging over three innings per appearance and is ranked 13th in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings. Ahern is expected to make his first start of the season this weekend against the Peacocks. Dominic Austing, Kyle Boser and Ahern are all ranked within the top ten of the NSIC in innings pitched as well. Bo Schmitz has caught three runners stealing this season, which ranks him in the top five of the conference as well.

Homestand... The Peacocks are at the beginning of a 12-game homestand that will last through Mar. 27. Upper Iowa will host Quincy in a non-conference double header on Wednesday, Mar. 21. UIU will return to play in the NSIC with twin bills on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 24-25 against UMary and Tuesday, Mar. 27 against Augustana.
