Late Push by Augustana Results in 1-1 Draw for Upper Iowa

The Peacocks held a 1-0 lead until the final minute of regulation when the Vikings scored the equalizer with 23 seconds left on the clock to force overtime at Pattison Field. Both teams were looking for redemption after falling in overtime on Friday’s contests, but neither team could find the golden goal in extra time to result in a 1-1 tie between Upper Iowa and Augustana University.

The Peacocks held a 1-0 lead until the final minute of regulation when the Vikings scored the equalizer with 23 seconds left on the clock to force overtime at Pattison Field. Both teams were looking for redemption after falling in overtime on Friday's contests, but neither team could find the golden goal in extra time to result in a 1-1 tie between Upper Iowa and Augustana University.

Haley Ramberg scored her second goal of the season in the 55th minute to give Upper Iowa (2-9-1, 1-7-1 NSIC) the 1-0 lead in the second period. Laura Murray took a high-flying shot from the left side that goalkeeper Meghan Kuntz had to jump up and knock down with one hand. The ball landed right in front of the goal line and took a nice hop which allowed Ramberg the opportunity to tap it in for the score.

Augustana (7-3-2, 6-2-1 NSIC) had a couple missed opportunities to get on the board midway through the first period thanks to solid defense from Aimee Sies, Katie Samuels and Natalie Rudrud. Morgan Keirstead fired back-to-back shots for the Vikings that were turned away by Samuels and Sies before AU's pressure ended with a save by Rudrud on Lauren Brownrigg's shot. Shortly after, Augustana did find the back of the net but it was called back on an offside call which kept the score tied at zero into the half. The Vikings held a 10-7 shot advantage in the first period and Rudrud picked up six saves.

After Ramberg's score early in the second period, the Peacocks went into high defense mode. The Vikings took six unanswered shots immediately following the goal but Upper Iowa continued to protect its half with efforts led by Mayte Van Hees and Molly Doran. Samuels helped switch the momentum back to the Peacocks with a couple shots and a corner kick but UIU wasn't able to score the insurance goal.

Despite a tremendous defensive game by Upper Iowa, Augustana was able to rally back and force overtime in the 90th minute. Peyton Stenzel played a great ball off the free kick to Rebekah Thoresen who fired a shot from the left side to the far post. Rudrud tried to make a diving stop on the ball but her attempt came up just short and the game was tied with 23 seconds left.

In an overtime setting that both teams found themselves in on Friday afternoon, neither team could find the back of the net for the redemption victory. UIU took three shots in double overtime with Murray having another big look for the Peacocks in the 103rd minute that Kuntz had to jump up and knock out of frame.

Upper Iowa took a season-high 17 shots on the afternoon led by Samuels and Facienne Graham with four a piece. Maida Alijagic, Murray and Ramberg each took a pair of chances as well, and Rudrud posted a season-high 13 saves.

The Peacocks stay home for another pair of NSIC matchups next weekend against St. Cloud State University (Oct. 12) and University of Minnesota Duluth (Oct. 14). Both games will be broadcast on KCRG-TV 9.2.
