Upper Iowa ran their set win streak to 10 straight sets claiming the first frame against No. 2 Northern State University, but the Wolves rallied to defeat the Peacocks in four sets on Friday night. After the two teams exchanged one-sided wins in the first two sets, NSU claimed a pair of hard fought sets to improve to 17-1 overall and 9-1 in the NSIC. The loss drops UIU's record to 11-7 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
The Peacocks came out of the gates on fire taking an early 13-5 lead fueled by three kills from
Anna Winter. The Wolves cut the gap in half and trailed 15-11, but the home team kept the momentum on their side with a quick 5-0 run to lead 20-11 highlighted by a pair of kills from
Lauren Wombles. Two more kills from Winter along with a pair from
Haley Poula and one from
Bethany Lovhaug ended the first set 25-16.
Northern State dominated the second set racing out to a 15-3 lead en route to a 25-17 win. The Wolves hit .350 in the second set with 16 kills and just a pair of attack errors.
In the third set Northern State moved out to an early 8-3 lead, but Upper Iowa bounced back and tied the score at 9-9. The set remained tight as both teams took their turn scoring two or three points at a time and UIU found themselves down 19-18 after kills by
Kaitlin Niedert, Wombles and Winter. The Wolves put their foot down at that point and closed out the set with a 6-1 run to win 25-19.
Upper Iowa pushed at the beginning of set four to take a 10-6 lead behind a pair of kills from both Niedert and Winter. Northern State fought back and tied the set at 12-12 and the teams bounced back and forth remaining tied at 18-18. UIU tried to pull away and led 21-19, but three quick points from the Wolves gave the visitors a slim advantage. The home team had the set tied at 22-22 and took a 23-22 lead, but Northern State ended the set and match with the final three points.
Hailey Busch scored three of the final four NSU points on kills and finished with 21 kills in the match. Ashley Rozell handed out 52 assists, while Jaiden Langlie recorded 34 digs.
Niedert (17) and Winter (16) combined for 33 of UIU's 53 kills on the night. UIU's hitters were set up by
Malissa LeClaire, who handed out 46 assists and added 20 digs.
Haley Weepie led the defense with 21 digs, while
Madi Meier added 19 digs.
Charisma Herr picked up 11 digs. Lovhaug and Poula both got their hands on 4 blocks apiece.
Upper Iowa will host the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Dorman Gymnasium.
