First Half Goals Propel UMary over Upper Iowa

A strong Marauders offense proved to be too much for the Peacocks as the University of Mary used a pair of goals in the first period to come away with a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon. UMary improved to 7-6-2, 6-5-2 NSIC while Upper Iowa falls to 3-11-2, 2-9-2 NSIC.

Caylin Cathey scored the first goal in the 20th minute on a nice team play by the Marauders. Sidney Burrell and Megan Lowery were credited with setting the score up for Cathey who was able to tap the ball past Natalie Rudrud who came off her line to try to put an end to the pressure. The Peacocks followed up with back-to-back corners and a pair of shots by Jessica Kron and Kelsey Hall that both went just shy of the mark.

Upper Iowa looked to be in prime position to tie the game in the 27th minute off the foot of Katie Samuels who was set up with a free kick from just under 30 yards out - a proven specialty of the freshman. Unfortunately for the Peacocks, goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman was able to scoop up the long shot and maintain the lead. A few minutes later, Burrell scored the insurance tally with a header to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Upper Iowa was limited to just two shots taken by Joline Hellstroem and Emily Hooper in the second period. UMary outshot the Peacocks 11-6 throughout the contest and kept the ball in the Marauder's attacking third for the majority of the game. Rudrud finished the afternoon with three saves.

The Peacocks will finish out the regular season next weekend with a pair of NSIC matchups. UIU will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to face the University of Sioux Falls on Friday afternoon before finishing the 2018 campaign at Pattison Field against the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs on Sunday for Senior Day.
