Â
NSIC Wrestler of the Week… True freshmanÂ
Dalton Hahn is the NSIC Wrestler of the Week after posting a 6-0 win over Minnesota Stat e's Corey Abernathy, who is ranked No. 6 in the nation. The award is the fifth for the Peacock wrestling program this season.
Brock Benitz,Â
Damian Penichet,Â
Maleek Williams andÂ
Logan Hopp earned the first four honors this season. Heading into the 184-pound match last Friday night, the No. 16 Mavericks led the No. 6 Peacocks 12-9. Hahn scored an early takedown and used a throw to grab four nearfall points. The freshman from Loganville, Wis. nearly got the win by fall, but Abernathy got out of trouble. Neither wrestler scored in the second or third periods as Hahn's victory pulled the Peacocks even with their guests. Hahn is now 20-11 with 7 bonus-point wins including a fall, a tech fall and five majors.
Â
Scouting the Mustangs… Southwest Minnesota State (6-4) took advantage of three Dakota Wesleyan forfeits and strung together four consecutive pins as a team on the way to a dominant 54-0 win over DWU on Wednesday night at home. The win was the first time SMSU had shutout an opponent since a 40-0 win over Minot State back in 2013-14. SMSU went 1-1 last week, rebounding from a Thursday night loss at Augustana with its first conference win of the season in a 37-6 win over Northern State on Friday night. The Mustangs had three pins in their win over Northern State and dropped bouts in just two weight classes.
