In a wild game in Winona, Minn. on Thursday night, the Peacock women's soccer team tied the Winona State Warriors in a scoreless affair to open the Northern Sun Conference season. Upper Iowa was outshot 21-9 in the game, but the defense was strong enough to keep the home team from scoring. UIU was unable to score themselves, but for 110 minutes they went toe-to-toe defensively to preserve the tie. With the stalemate, UIU opens the NSIC season 0-0-1 and sits with a 0-2-1 overall mark. The Peacocks earned their first tie in two seasons, when they tied Augustana University in Fayette on Sept. 19, 2015. Winona State now has three one's in their record, at 1-1-1.
The home team held the advantage in shot attempts in the first half, 11-6, including a 5-3 lead in shots placed on goal. UIU goalkeeper
Caila Petrie picked up five saves in the half, preserving the tie heading into the strategy session. Upper Iowa had their chances in the half, with three corner kicks earned, but were unable to convert.
In the second half, WSU led 7-3 in shot attempts, but again, the defensive back line of the Peacocks held them out of the back of the net. Petrie picked up five more saves in the second half, and the game went into overtime scoreless. Winona State tallied five corners in the second period, but could not convert. The Warriors were the only team to get a shot off in both overtime periods, with one in each 10-minute interval. UIU did not get a chance to take a shot, but despite not having the ball much, they were able to preserve the tie.
Five cautions were handed out in the game as well, as the game was physical from the very beginning. Upper Iowa is now 3-8-1 all time against the Warriors in their history.
The Peacocks will have nine days off before they head to Bemidji, Minn. to take on the Bemidji State Beavers on Saturday, Sept. 16. The game gets started at 1 p.m. in northern Minnesota.
