The Peacock women's soccer team was held to just six total shots on Friday afternoon, and just two shots placed on goal in the 3-0 loss to the St. Cloud State Huskies at Pattison Field in Fayette. SCSU scored late in the first half to grab a lead, and would not let go with two more scores in the second stanza to put the game away. With the loss, Upper Iowa drops to 1-6-1 overall, and 1-4-1 in the Northern Sun Conference. St. Cloud State moves to one game over .500 at 5-4, and are now 3-3 in league play.
The day started slow for both offenses, as the first half saw a total of eight shot attempts. The Huskies and Peacocks were both playing well on defense, but late in the half, the visitors found a spark. SCSU used second chances to score on Friday, and it started in the 40th minute. After a corner kick, Sara Magno was able to get a shot off in the box. It was saved by UIU goalkeeper
Caila Petrie, but as it deflected off her hands, and slightly behind her, Tatyana Gusakow was able to sent it through the net for her second goal of the season. It looked as though it would be a clean save, but after the deflection, St. Cloud State had the 1-0 lead. The score would remain as the teams went into halftime.
SCSU held a 5-3 lead in shot attempts in the first half, and added a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks to give themselves a few more opportunities. Petrie tallied three first-stanza saves. In the second half, the visitors would add to their lead.
In the 65th minute, the Huskies would benefit from another corner kick and deflection. The corner from Brooke Bares came into the box, and after it bounced around, Maria Witte scored her first career goal to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage. Upper Iowa's defense, the unit that had been keeping them in games throughout the season, has now surrendered six goals in their last two games. St. Cloud State added its third and final goal in the 85th minute, when another corner kick resulted in points. A header shot from Witte was saved by new goalkeeper
Liz Tank, and Maria Kass was there to grab the deflection and score to give SCSU an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
Upper Iowa trailed in shot attempts (14-6), shots placed on goal (9-2), and corners earned (10-2). Petrie registered five saves in 70 minutes in goal, and takes the loss, dropping to 1-6-1 in net. Tank earned 19 minutes and added a save herself.
The Peacocks will have Saturday off, but will take the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 1 against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to wrap up the weekend. The game gets underway at 1 p.m., and can be seen online on UIU TV and in eastern Iowa on KCRG TV 9.3.
