The Peacock women's soccer team fought hard on Sunday afternoon at Pattison Field, but ultimately dropped an overtime thriller to the Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth. Upper Iowa took the early lead in the first half, but the visitors came back just before halftime to tie it up. The game moved into overtime, and after a few opportunities, UMD found the back of the net with a half minute remaining to seal the comeback win. With the loss, Upper Iowa drops to 1-7-1 on the season, and is 1-4-1 in the Northern Sun Conference. The Bulldogs improve to 7-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league play.
Upper Iowa's offense kept the ball the majority of the first half, outshooting their guests 11-3 in the frame. The scoring got started in the third minute of the game, in an unlikely manner.
Charlotte Ryan scored her first goal of the season, and it came in the form of a corner kick. Ryan bent the ball from the left corner and snuck it in the right side of the goal for the score, and UIU took a 1-0 advantage. The Peacocks held a 4-1 lead in corners earned as well, but could not add another score to their total. The visitors hung around, and eventually found the equalizer late in the period.
In the 42nd minute, Destiny Schmitz scored her first goal of the season after getting a pass from Anna Morrison. The goal came on the right side of the field, and the visitors had tied the game, and grabbed a little bit of momentum going into halftime.
In the second half, the script flipped completely. UMD commanded the ball, and held a dominant 10-1 advantage in shot attempts. However, the Peacock defense held their own, and did not allow a goal in the frame. UIU goalkeeper
Caila Petrie tallied a pair of second half saves, and the Bulldogs missed some opportunities as well. The visitors held a 4-0 lead in corners earned as well. The game moved into overtime, and the Bulldogs would complete the comeback.
After two shot attempts in the first overtime, Schmitz finished the game off with 35 seconds remaining with a goal from three yards away on the left side. The double assist came from Nan Glinsek and Natalie St. Martin to seal the victory.
For the match, UIU trailed 16-12 in shot attempts, but the teams tied with six shots placed on goal. UMD held a slight 6-5 advantage in corners earned as well. Petrie tallied four saves for the match, and falls to 1-7-1 in goal.
Upper Iowa will have a home and away match next weekend as they continue their treck in the NSIC. UIU heads to Marshall, Minn. to take on Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. The Peacocks then host Sioux Falls on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
