The Peacock women's soccer team fell to 0-2 on Saturday afternoon after dropping a 2-0 decision to the Fort Hays State Tigers on the road in Hays, Kan. The Tigers shut down the Upper Iowa offense, outshooting their guests 12-6 in the match and limiting UIU to just three shots on goal. Similar to Thursday's game against Washburn, the opponent picked up a pair of goals in the second half to earn the win.
Fort Hays State was able to tally six shot attempts in the first half, but the Peacock defense and goalkeeper Caila Petrie were able to keep the Tigers out of the goal. The UIU offense, however, would struggle to get anything going, mustering up just two shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes. Both teams went into the half scoreless, but FHSU had chances to capitalize. They would turn those chances into goals in the second half.
In the 65th minute, Catalina Hernandez was able to come up with the ball near the goal, and using her chest, was able to score the game's first goal. FHSU continued their solid defense, keeping UIU out of the net on four shots. In the final minutes, the Tigers put the game away. Eden Stoddard received a pass from Darby Hirsch and converted a goal on a breakaway to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage with under three minutes remaining.
Petrie finished with four saves, while
Maddie North led the team in shot attempts with two.
Jordyn Ostrowski tallied a pair of shot attempts on the day as well.
The Peacocks will continue their season-opening road trip with a trip to Winona, Minn. on Thursday, Sept. 7 to open the Northern Sun Conference schedule against the Winona State Warriors. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
