Upper Iowa dropped their women's soccer season opener at Washburn University 2-0 on Thursday evening in Topeka, Kan. The Ichabods outshot their guests 12-5 in the match and limited the Peacocks' shots on goal to just two in the match. Washburn used a pair of second half goals to claim the season-opening victory.
Both teams struggled to get shots in the first half as the two squads combined for just five shots total. Washburn came out of the halftime break and stepped up their attack sending nine shots at UIU's goalkeeper
Caila Petrie.
A scramble in front of the Upper Iowa goal resulted in a shot that found the back of the net in the 53rd minute giving the Ichabods a 1-0 lead. Late in the match, Washburn added an insurance goal in the 89th minute to push their advantage to 2-0. Emily Stauffer scored the first goal and assisted on the second which was put in by Paige Swanson.
The Peacocks will remain in Topeka for their second match of the season on Saturday, Sept. 2. Upper Iowa will face off against the Tigers of Fort Hays State University at 2 p.m.
