Peacock Volleyball Adds Final National Letter of Intent for 2017

Erica Armstrong signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and athletic careers at Upper Iowa with the Peacock volleyball program.

Erica Armstrong signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and athletic careers at Upper Iowa with the Peacock volleyball program. Armstrong comes to UIU from two years at Kirkwood Community College and Clayton Ridge High School. The Peacock transfer joins a trio of high school seniors that committed to Upper Iowa in the fall. The three graduating seniors include Kaitlin Niedert of Independence, Iowa, Seton Tournoux of Springfield, Ill. and Mady Zula of Pella, Iowa.

"Erica has been a part of a very successful program at Kirkwood," said UIU Head Volleyball Coach Aaron Nelson. "She's had a chance to be a part of some big matches with the Eagles. A solid blocker with great vision and lateral movement, she works hard on every play to cover the entire net.  Along with our three incoming freshmen, Erica's attitude and competitive spirit will fit in very well with our current group of returners next fall.  We are excited to add an individual with her experience and character to our family."

Armstrong, a 6-0 middle blocker, earned several postseason honors including NJCAA Region XI All-Tournament Team, as well as the NJCAA Region XI and All-Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Second Team following the 2016 season at Kirkwood. Armstrong was a big part of the Eagles going 34-10 and placing seventh at the NJCAA National Championships for the second straight season. In fact, Kirkwood posted a 64-27 record over the last two seasons under Head Coach Jill Williams, an alumna of Upper Iowa and former Peacock volleyball assistant coach.

The Guttenberg, Iowa product led the Eagles in blocks over the last two seasons with 313. Armstrong's 163 blocks in 2016 ranked 10th nationally, and her 150 blocks in 2015 ranked 18th best in the nation. Armstrong knocked down 281 kills (1.9/set) last season following 181 as a freshman. She also worked hard in the classroom earning a pair of Academic All-Region XI Second Team honors.

While at Clayton Ridge, Armstrong was a three-time All-Upper Iowa Conference performer. She was named to the All-UIC first Team as a senior after a pair of second Team honors as a sophomore and junior.

The daughter of Barry and Michelle Armstrong, Erica will major in human services with a minor in psychology.
