The Upper Iowa softball team picked up its second straight sweep on Wednesday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn. against the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears. The Peacocks struck early in game one, taking a 3-0 lead that they would not surrender behind
Erin Drahozal in the circle. After trailing 1-0 early in game two, UIU would tie it in the third and score three in the seventh to take the lead and earn the sweep. With the two wins, UIU's winning streak is now five, their longest of the year, and they improve to 13-23 overall and 5-9 in the Northern Sun Conference. With the two losses, CSP drops to 11-24 overall and 3-11 in league play.
UIU will have a quick turnaround, as they come back to Fayette to host St. Cloud State University on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader, and then will wrap up a six-game stretch in three days with a twin bill with the University of Minnesota Duluth on Friday at 10 a.m. The games have been moved from their original Friday/Saturday slots because of predicted bad weather and low temperatures in northeast Iowa. The teams will try to get their games in before the weather comes over the weekend.
Game One
Julia Buffington homered in the second inning for the Peacocks to get the scoring started. The two-run shot gave UIU a 2-0 advantage before
Shannon Nix hit a run-scoring double in the third to give the Peacocks a 3-0 lead. CSP got within 3-2 in the sixth inning, but
Tara Walls answered in the seventh with an rbi-double to give the visitors the 4-2 lead.
Erin Drahozal slammed the door to pick up her fourth win, pitching the complete game in the circle.
Walls, Nix, and
Sami Kay Shafranski each tallied two hits for UIU.
Game Two
Emily Kisch went the distance in game two for the Peacocks, and although she trailed 1-0 after one, her offense helped her in the third inning.
Sammy Garrett ripped an rbi-single to tie the game, and the pitchers took over. Still tied at one heading to the seventh, the Peacock offense broke the game open.
Katie Sammons reached on a fielder's choice to score a run, and an error on the play allowed another run to score to give the visitors a 3-1 advantage. Buffington would then single to plate another, and
Riley Kruel would pick up an RBI with a sacrifice fly. The 4-1 lead was all Kisch needed to earn the win.
Kruel went seven strong, allowing a run on six hits. UIU tallied nine hits in the win, with nine different players contributing with a base knock.
