Peacock Baseball Splits at Quincy

Upper Iowa rallied from a 7-2 deficit to claim game one 10-9 in extra innings and then lost the nightcap 11-2 to the Hawks of Quincy

The Peacock baseball team (2-4) split a pair of non-conference games at Quincy University (7-5) in Quincy, Ill. on Tuesday. Upper Iowa rallied from a 7-2 deficit in game one to claim a 10-9 decision in extra innings before the Hawks took game two by an 11-2 score. After tallying 15 hits in the first game, the Peacock bats went quiet in the second game with only 3 hits.

A four-run inning in the bottom of the third for the Hawks was highlighted by a three-run homerun by Jake Walters, his seventh of the season.

The Peacocks bounced back in the top of the fourth with two runs. Zac Cain walked to open the inning and came home on an inside-the-park homerun by Dominic Hillesheim.

Quincy didn't waste any time resetting their lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. A two-run triple highlighted the three-run inning and pushed the home team's lead out to 7-2.

UIU began their rally in the sixth inning with three runs on five hits including rbi-singles by Hillesheim, Calton and Ravelo. The Peacocks then added four more runs on another five hits in the seventh inning to take a 9-7 lead. The four runs came on a rbi-single off the bat of Emmett Kulick, a two-run single by Hillesheim and a Calton rbi-bunt.

A two-run homer for Matt Hilmes with one out tied the game at 9-9 and sent the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, Mitch Moser reached on a fielding error at short and stole second bases before moving to third on a single to center by Alex George. Cain stepped in and bunted down the third base line to push Moser home and give the Peacocks a 10-9 advantage. With two outs, a second error in the inning loaded the bases, but a flyout ended the threat.

Moser (1-0), who gave up the two-run shot to tie in the seventh, pitched a quick one-two-three inning in the eighth to earn the victory. Tyus Adkins got the no-decision after throwing four innings and allowing 7 runs on 11 hits while striking out 3. Miguel Rodriguez (1.0 innings), Tanner Poor (.2 innings) and Ross Kulick (.1 innings) kept the Peacocks in the game while the offense rallied from behind.

At the plate, Hillesheim had three hits with two runs scored and five runs batted in. George, Cain, Kulick and Calton all had two hits apiece.

In the second game, Clayton Lieb (0-1) got his first start for the Peacocks, but suffered the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in his three innings of work. Mitch Silberstein threw well in relief going two innings and allowing just one hit to the Hawks.

Quincy scored a pair of runs in the first inning and added a run in each of the next two innings moving out to a 4-0 lead.

A two-run double by Ravelo scored Hillesheim and Cal Seehase cutting the Quincy lead in half, 4-2. Silberstein took over in the fourth and fifth innings keeping the Hawks off the board, but a huge seven-run inning for the home team in the bottom of the sixth put the game out of reach. The Hawks scored their touchdown on just three hits, but took advantage of four walks, a hit batsmen and a fielding error.

Ravelo, Colton Janssen and Cain were the three Peacocks to record a hit, with Ravelo coming up with the only runs batted in.

Upper Iowa will have a quick turnaround as they jump back on the field on Wednesday, Mar. 8, in Minneapolis, Minn. inside the US Bank Stadium. The Peacocks will take on the Beavers of Bemidji State University at 9:30 p.m.
