The Peacock baseball team posted their first double header sweep of the season as Tuesday turned to Wednesday at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. Upper Iowa defeated Bemidji State University 6-2 late on Tuesday night in a game that started at 9:42 p.m. and then won game two in the wee hours on Wednesday morning, just prior to 2:00 a.m., on a walk-off, rbi-single off the bat of
Alex George. The two wins pulled UIU's record to 4-4, while the Beavers fell to 1-4.
Â
Zackary Cain (1-0) threw a complete game in his second start of the season in the opener. The sophomore went all seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three batters. Cain showed great control giving first base to just two Beavers with one walk and one hit batsman.
Â
Luis Ravelo was the story at the plate in the first game coming up with two hits including a triple and a homerun; the senior shortstop scored twice and drove in three Peacocks. Ravelo led the game off with a triple to left and came home on a sacrifice fly by George.
Â
The Beavers tied the game in the top of the second with a homerun, but Cain bounced back with a pair of strikeouts and leftfielder
Anthony Calton cut down a runner at the plate for the final out.
Â
The Peacocks broke the game open in the fourth inning with five runs on four hits highlighted by a two-run double to right by Calton and three-run homerun over the wall in left center by Ravelo.
Â
Bemidji State got one run back in the sixth on three hits, but Cain was able to shut down the rally and strand a pair of Beavers on the bases. BSU stranded another pair of runner on base in the seventh as UIU recorded a foul fly out and a fly ball to the outfield to secure their 6-2 victory.
Â
Calton joined Ravelo with a pair of hits in the game, while three other UIU players recorded a hit.
Â
UIU loaded the bases with one out in the first inning of game two and Cain pushed a run home on a fielder's choice for the game's first run.
Â
Both teams stayed quiet until the top of the fifth inning when the Beavers marked three runs on the scoreboard on four hits. The inning was highlighted by an rbi-double and a two-out, two-run single giving BSU a 3-1 lead.
Â
The Peacocks tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after loading the bases with one out. Jake Greco drove
Colton Janssen and Cain to the plate with a single to left and advanced to second on the play to set UIU up with a pair of runners in scoring position. Two quick outs ended the threat and kept Upper Iowa from taking the lead.
Â
After
Tanner Poor closed out his second scoreless inning of relief in the top of the seventh, the Peacocks came to the plate looking for the win. With one out,
Mitch Moser doubled to right and came home on George's single to center to end the game and give UIU the sweep.
Â
Poor (1-0) earned the win in relief with two innings of shutout ball allowing just a hit while striking out one.
Brett Fanning got the no-decision after 5 innings of work; the redshirt junior allowed three runs on four hits while striking out four Beavers.
Â
George led UIU at the plate in game two with a pair of hits including the game winner, while five other players picked up a hit apiece.
Â
Upper Iowa will have a week and a half off until they open play in the Northern Sun Conference. The Peacocks will host the Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 18-19 with double headers starting at noon each day.
