THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK WOMEN'S HOOPS... Upper Iowa will be on the road this weekend with games in Quincy, Ill. at the Subway Classic hosted by Quincy University. The Peacocks will take on the McKendree University Bearcats on Friday at 5 p.m. and then return to Pepsi Arena to challenge the Quincy Hawks on Saturday at 3 p.m.
PEACOCKS POST FIRST VICTORY... Upper Iowa earned their first victory of the season on Tuesday night in Fayette. The Peacocks defeated the Pride of Clarke University 74-69. The loss marked Clarke's first defeat of the season after opening the year with five straight wins. After only scoring 32 points and 49 points in their two games last weekend, the Peacock offense exploded in the first half scoring 47 points and claiming an 11-point lead at the break. Upper Iowa scored the first six points of the game and used a 14-2 run over the first five minutes. The opening run was fueled by scores from all five starters and capped off by a Haley Martin three-pointer. UIU had to hold on in the fourth quarter to preserve the win, but the Peacocks came away with a 74-69 victory. The Peacocks out-rebounded the Pride 48-34 including a 21-12 advantage in offensive rebounds. Upper Iowa took advantage of their opportunities and scored 22 second chance points. Haley Martin led Upper Iowa with 10 rebounds while
Ashley Rosenstiel pulled down 7. Blair Klostermann led five Peacocks in double figures with 16 points. Natalie Dinius added 12 points on 4 three-pointers, while Rosenstiel and Savannah Domeyer each knocked down 4 shots to score 11 points apiece and Bekka Pierson converted all 4 of her shots at the free throw line to score 10.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS... Â McKendree hits the road for the first time this season to meet Upper Iowa and Winona State University. The Bearcats are coming off an 88-44 victory over Blackburn College in their season opener on Saturday. The 44-point margin of victory was the Bearcats' largest in a regular-season opener since becoming NCAA Division II members in 2013. All 12 McKendree players scored in the win, with Jordan Heberg and Sydney Diekhoff sharing team-high scoring honors with 13 points each. The Bearcats raced to a 28-8 lead after one quarter and never looked back to grab the non-conference win. McKendree was picked to finish fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's Central Division.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS... Quincy was picked to finish fifth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's Central Division and the Hawks have started 0-2 this season. The team opened their season at the Crossover Challenge in Nashville, Tenn. Quincy lost to Walsh University 75-55 and Trevecca Nazarene University 69-63 in double overtime. Anika Webster leads the offense with a 14.5 points per game average, while Julia Ruzevich is averaging 10 points a game. Alexa Low is living on the boards and has cleared 11.5 per game and Maddie Spagnola has pulled down 6.5 per contest. The Hawks' offense is running through Michaela Gronewold, who is averaging 4 assists per game.
LOOKING AHEAD... After the Subway Classic, the Peacocks have a short break before their next game. Upper Iowa will host the Warriors of Winona State University in Fayette for both teams' Northern Sun Conference openers on Saturday, Nov. 25. Two days later, Upper Iowa will travel to Jefferson City, Mo. to take on the Lincoln University Blue Tigers in UIU's final non-conference game of the season.
