#20 Mavericks Rally to Top Peacocks in Home Finale

#20 Minnesota State 2 - Upper Iowa 1. The Mavericks scored twice in the second half to come back to top the Peacocks in the final home game of the season.

The Peacock women's soccer team wrapped up their home schedule on Friday afternoon at a very cold Pattison Field in Fayette. Weather conditions included a mix of rain and snow, and a 35 miles per hour wind that affected the ball and the players all afternoon. After Upper Iowa claimed a first-half lead, the No. 20 Mavericks of Minnesota State University came back in the second half with a pair of goals to claim the victory. The loss ends the home campaign for UIU, and they sit at 4-11-1 on the year and 4-9-1 in the Northern Sun Conference. Minnesota State improves to 14-2-2 overall and 12-1-1 in league play.

Upper Iowa had the wind to their backs and right side in the first half, and were able to take advantage in the seventh minute. Charlotte Ryan, who handles corner kicks for the Peacocks, bent a corner through the box and into the net after a deflection off the goalkeeper's hands. Ryan has now scored two goals this season, and they both have come at home off a corner kick. Ryan gave the team a 1-0 lead they would take with them to halftime.

The Peacocks led at the break, but were outshot 8-3 in the process. UIU hung in on defense in the half, and earned a much-needed break at the intermission to warm up in the locker room. The teams came out in the second half, and the Mavericks started to show why they are the #20 team in the country, as they used the wind to their advantage to control the ball. MSU outshot the Peacocks 16-0 in the second period, and found a way to score twice in the process.

The equalizer for the Mavericks did not come, however, until the 73rd minute. Despite all the shot attempts, the UIU defense held strong until the end. The Mavericks used a goal from Lauren Kizlick to tie the match after her fifth goal of the season. The ball found the back of the net somehow after a scramble in the box. Minnesota State took the lead in the 82nd minute late when Maddy Burandt scored her third goal of the year from the right side. The ball snuck by goalkeeper Caila Petrie, and MSU held a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

For the match, MSU held a 24-3 lead in shot attempts, including a 9-2 advantage in shots placed on goal. Petrie tallied seven saves for the match, but drops to 4-11-1 in net this season.

The Peacocks will take the pitch one more time this season when they head to St. Paul, Minn. to match up with the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29.
