Late Goal Propels Peacocks to Season-Finale Win

Upper Iowa 2 - Concordia-St. Paul 1. Jordyn Ostrowski scored with five minutes remaining to upend the Golden Bears in the final game of the 2017 season.

The Peacock women's soccer team picked up a win in their final game of the 2017 season on Sunday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn. against the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul. Upper Iowa scored first, but moments later allowed the equalizer just seconds later to tie the match at halftime. Late in the game, however, UIU found a way to break the tie to earn the win. With the victory, the Peacocks finish the season 5-11-1 overall and 5-9-1 in the Northern Sun Conference. CSP drops to 10-7-1 overall and 8-6-1 in the NSIC, and will head to Augustana for the conference tournament next week.

Upper Iowa got the scoring started, but Concordia-St. Paul waited just 45 seconds to tie it up. At the 20:10 mark, UIU's Sonia Fernandez scored on a header off a set piece by teammate Maddie North to give the Peacocks the advantage. But at the 20:55 mark, CSP's Jordan Rowan-Stafford dribbled the ball around the Upper Iowa defenders in the box, and pushed it through the net for the equalizer. The game was tied at that point, and would stay that way at halftime.

CSP held a 10-2 lead in shot attempts in the first stanza, and a 2-1 advantage in corners earned. Goalkeeper Caila Petrie earned the only save of the half, and would add a second one in the final 45 minutes to end her season with 85 saves.

In the second half, the Golden Bears led 7-5 in shot attempts, but could not find a way to score against the Peacock defense. Each team had three chances at a corner kick, but none of those opportunities were cashed in. Upper Iowa found a way at the end of the game, when junior Jordyn Ostrowski got the ball off a deflection and sent it to the bottom left corner of the goal for the score. The goal came with just five minutes to play, and the defense would hold on for the win. Ostrowski finished the season with six goals to lead the Peacocks.

For the match, there was a 17-7 lead for the home team in shots, but the visitors led 5-3 in shots on goal. Upper Iowa's efficiency won them the game as they close out the season on a high note.

Upper Iowa will miss the postseason for just the second time in the last six seasons, and will say goodbye to six seniors in Petrie, Lexi Vaughn, Gina Britton, Charlotte Ryan, Rachel Fowler, and Makayla Nassy-Wong. However, going into next season the team will bring back a plethora of talent with the like of juniors Ostrowski, Lia Passini, Kelsey Hall, and Mayte Van Hees. The team also brings back sophomores Corel Carmichael, Laura Murray, Molly Doran, Birgit Rijnders, Hannah Dotter, and Maddie North. The team also has current freshmen Emma Fellowes, Sonia Fernandez, and Katie Samuels. Liz Tank, who played in one match this season, will return as a sophomore goalkeeper as well.
