The Peacock men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision on Saturday in Bethany, Okla. at Southern Nazarene University. Upper Iowa closed out their non-conference week, and drops to 5-8 on the season. After trailing 2-0, UIU scored a late goal in the 71st minute, but it was not enough in the loss. Southern Nazarene improves to 2-13-1 with the win.
The Crimson Storm scored very early to start the game with a goal in the second minute from Cutter Smith. UIU led 10-7 in shot attempts in the first half, and Connor Rortedt tallied five saves as well. However, the Peacocks could not capitalize on offense, while the home team was able to do so. SNU added to their lead in the second half with a goal from Pedro Garcia in the 62nd minute.
In the second half, the home team controlled the ball, holding the Peacocks to just three shot attempts. UIU was outshot 14-13 for the match, including 9-5 in shots placed on goal. Upper Iowa got on the board late in the game, when
Ruairidh Crawford scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 71st minute. The lead was still 2-1 for the Crimson Storm, and they would hold on for the victory.
Rortvedt ended the day with seven saves, and offensively
Italo Martins Soares finished with three shot attempts to lead the way.
Seth Russell and
Aaron Morgan each added two shot attempts as well.
Upper Iowa will have a pair of games next week, as they head to Hays, Kan. next Thursday, Oct. 26th at 5 p.m. to take on the Fort Hays State Tigers. UIU will then host the Univeristy of Mary in a non-conference match next Monday, Oct. 30 for their final non-MIAA game of the season. Monday's game at Pattison Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
