Marauders Blank Peacocks 2-0 on Senior Day

UMary 2 - Upper Iowa 0. The Marauders spoiled Senior Day in Fayette after shutting out the Peacocks 2-0. UIU honored their six seniors after the game.

The Peacock women's soccer team hosted Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at a damp and muddy Pattison Field in Fayette, but it was the visiting Marauders of the University of Mary that came out victorious in a 2-0 affair. The Marauders scored once in each half to command the lead, and held Upper Iowa scoreless in the process. After the game, the team honored its six seniors for their contributions to the program over the years. With the loss, UIU drops to 3-9-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the Northern Sun Conference. UMary improves to 8-3-2 overall and 6-3-2 in league play with the win.

Jade Smith scored both Marauder goals on Sunday, and the first came in the 18th minute. Smith took a pass from Caylin Cathey, who assisted on both goals, and scored off a cross from right to left from about seven yards away. The goal highlighted a 13-8 lead in shot attempts for UMary, as they took the lead into halftime. Goalkeeper Caila Petrie finished the half with three saves in net.

In the second half, Cathey and Smith connected again for a score to push the lead to 2-0 early in the second half. In the 46th minute, Smith scored from the middle for her team-leading sixth score of the season to extend the lead. Upper Iowa would match UMary with nine shot attempts in the second half, but the Peacocks could not find a way to get the ball through the net as Marauder goalkeeper tallied a total of five saves.

For the match, UIU trailed 22-17 in shot attempts, including 6-5 in shots on goal. The teams tied with five corner kicks earned, but UMary held a slight 5-4 edge in saves.

After the game, the Peacocks honored their six seniors, Petrie, Charlotte Ryan, Makayla Nassy-Wong, Lexi Vaughn, Rachel Fowler, and Gina Britton. The six have compiled 29 wins, including 26 in the Northern Sun Conference. This group played a major role in the success of the program in the 2014 and 2016 campaigns, when they made trips to the NSIC Tournament, including a first-round victory over Minot State in 2014. These six have combined for 219 matches played and have taken 72 shots, and have prevented many offenses from scoring over the years.

Upper Iowa has one more game at Pattison Field this season, as they host the #13 Mavericks of Minnesota State University on Friday, Oct. 27, but before then, the team will hit the road for a pair of games at MSU Moorhead and at Northern State on Saturday, Oct. 21, and Sunday, Oct. 22.
