Beavers Strike Twice in Second Half to Top Peacocks

Minot State 3 - Upper Iowa 1. The Beavers scored twice in four minutes in the second half to pull ahead 3-1, and end the Peacocks two-game winning streak on Saturday.

The Peacock women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at the hands of the Minot State Beavers on Saturday afternoon at a rainy Pattison Field in Fayette. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, UIU answered back with a goal early in the second half. However, the Beavers scored twice in four minutes to pull ahead 3-1, and they would hold on to win by that score. With the loss, Upper Iowa's two-game winning streak is over, and they drop to 3-8-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the Northern Sun Conference. Minot State improves to 8-4-1 overall and 7-3 in league play with the win.

The scoring began in the first half with the visitors using a Sofia Lewis pass to her teammate Haley Berryman, who scored her fourth goal of the season, and her first of the match. The play was big for the Beavers, as they were outshot by the Peacocks 8-4 in the first half. Minot State capitalized on their limited opportunities, and took the lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Upper Iowa responded. In the 61st minute, Rachel Fowler took a free kick from just outside the box after a Minot State foul, and she sent the shot past the keeper for her third goal of the season. Fowler tied the match, and the game was back on. However, just a minute later, the visitors captured all the momentum back. Berryman scored her second goal of the game in the 62nd minute after taking what appeared to be a cross from the right side, and with a little help from the wind, was able to put it into the net for the score. Minot State led 2-1, and the were not done. In the 66th minute, Andrea Franco added a goal to push the lead to 3-1, and the Peacocks just could not find the answer on offense.

Upper Iowa had ample opportunities, but just ran into some bad luck. The Peacocks outshot their guests 16-12 for the match, but found the crossbar three times, and the post twice. Caila Petrie tallied three saves in the match, and offensively, Sonia Fernandez led the way with six shot attempts. Birgit Rijnders added four shots, while Charlotte Ryan added three.

The Peacocks are back on Pattison Field on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for Senior Day as they host the UMary Marauders. After the game, the team will recognize six seniors, Fowler, Petrie, Ryan, Makayla Nassy-Wong, Gina Britton, and Lexi Vaughn.
