The Peacock women's soccer team earned their second shutout of 2017 on Friday night in Marshall, Minn. at Southwest Minnesota State University; the first came in a 0-0 the with Winona State. Upper Iowa earned a 1-0 win this time behind a 24-7 advantage in shot attempts. The defense was the story as UIU earned a 1-0 lead at halftime, and then shut down the Mustang offense. With the win, Upper Iowa improves to 2-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the Northern Sun Conference. SMSU drops to 0-10 on the year, and 0-8 in league play.
UIU dominated the shot total in both halves, including a 12-5 lead in the first 45 minutes. The lone score of the game came in the 27th minute, when junior
Jordyn Ostrowski scored to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The goal was the team-leading fourth of the season for Ostrowski, and that would prove to be all the Peacocks would need.
Caila Petrie tallied three first-half saves in the dominant first half for the team.
The second half featured one of the best defensive performances of the season. SMSU's offense tallied just two shot attempts, while the Peacocks still added 12 of their own. Despite not being able to score in the second half, the defense held strong to preserve the shutout.
Petrie finished with four saves, while the offense tallied its highest shot total of the season.
Birgit Rijnders led the way with 10 shot attempts, while Ostrowski added six of her own.

Rachel Fowler tallied two shots apiece as well.
The Peacocks will return to Pattison Field in Fayette on Sunday for a matchup with the Sioux Falls Cougars at 1 p.m. The game can be seen online on UIU TV and in eastern Iowa on KCRG TV 9.2.
