The Upper Iowa women's soccer team posted its second shutout of the season after defeating the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 2-0 Friday night in northern Minnesota. The Peacocks scored in each half to put away UMD and build its first winning streak of 2016. Despite trailling in almost every category, UIU found a way to convert a couple of shots into goals to win its second straight game. With the win, Upper Iowa gets back to .500 at 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the NSIC. The Bulldogs drop to 4-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in league play with the loss.
In a slow first half, it was the Peacocks who controlled the ball. Upper Iowa tallied five shots in the first 45 minutes, compared to just two for the home team. It paid off for the visitors when senior
Christiana Atteberry gathered the ball and scored to get UIU on the board in the 35th minute. Atteberry has now scored in consecutive games, and has two goals on the year. Minnesota Duluth never really had an opportunity to score in the first half, recording a shot in the 11th and 24th minutes, but the Peacock backline was outstanding. Atteberry earned one more shot before the half, but missed wide, and the visitors took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The second half was a different story. Minnesota Duluth took seven shots and earned one corner in the first 13 minutes, but could not find a way to score. UIU junior goalkeeper tallied four saves in that span, preserving the 1-0 lead. Upper Iowa took just two shots in that time, and that capitalized. Sophomore defender
Jordyn Ostrowski, got a pass from teammate Breanne Fenton, and took advantage when she got her opportunity, scoring her first goal of the season in the 61st minute. The Peacocks led 2-0 despite trailing in almost every category. The home team led in shots (11-3) and corners earned (3-2) in the second half, but Petrie and the defense would not budge. The Upper Iowa goalie tallied four saves in the second half, and preserved the shutout victory.
For the match, the home team held the advantage in shots (13-8) and corners (4-2), while the teams each recorded 5 shots on goal. Petrie earned the win in net, improving to 4-4 after tallying five saves on the evening. Sisley Ng took the loss in goal for the Bulldogs, dropping to 1-3-1 on the year after recording three saves. Six different Peacocks earned a shot attempt, including two apiece from Atteberry and
Lauren Sharp.
