Peacocks Stay Hot With Comeback, Overtime Win in St. Cloud

Gaby Diaz's goal 28 seconds into overtime propelled Upper Iowa to its third straight win on Sunday afternoon in St. Cloud. It is the first three-game winning streak for the Peacocks since October of 2014.

The Upper Iowa women's soccer team earned a hard-fought, 2-1 overtime win on Sunday afternoon up in St. Cloud, Minn. against the St. Cloud State Huskies. The Peacocks trailed late in the second half, but found a way to send the match to the extra period. Upper Iowa wasted no time in OT, scoring 28 seconds in to win their third consecutive game. With the victory, UIU improves to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play, and has earned its first three-game winning streak since October of 2014. St. Cloud State falls to 5-3-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the NSIC with the loss.

The home team controlled the ball for the most part in a slow first half. The Huskies led the Peacocks 8-3 in shot attempts and 3-1 in corners earned. Both goalkeepers were excellent in the first period, as junior Caila Petrie tallied four saves on shots placed on goal. SCSU's Julia Gifford recorded three saves in the first half, including back-to-back saves in the 18th and 21st minutes, denying UIU's Maddie North and Charlotte Ryan chances to score. Both teams went into the locker room in a scoreless match.

It was much of the same for a majority of the second half, but as the match wore on, the offenses would finally come through. St. Cloud State tallied ten more shots in the second frame, compared to just three for UIU, but both teams would find a way to score. In the 68th minute, Husky forward Monica Majeski took a pass on a free kick from teammate Maria Kass and won in a scrum to put the ball in the back of the net, and SCSU led 1-0. Upper Iowa was not getting many chances at that point, and they were in need of a spark. The spark came in the form of Jordyn Ostrowski. Ostrowski received a pass from freshman Birgit Rijnders and tied the match with her second goal in as many games. It was just the third shot of the half for UIU, but it was a big one, and the game was suddently tied, 1-1. The home team earned three more shots before the end of regulation, but Petrie saved two of those shots, and Upper Iowa blocked the third one to keep the game tied, and send the match to overtime.

Upper Iowa wasted no time in the extra period. 28 seconds in, Brianne Fenton sent a pass to Gaby Diaz. Diaz controlled the ball, and sent it past the Husky defense for the game-winning goal, and her first career score. The freshman won the game, and gave the Peacocks their first three-game winning streak since October of 2014 when they won 10 in a row.

The home team held a significant advantage in shots (18-7), shots on goal (10-5), and corners earned (10-2). However, Upper Iowa was able to cash in on their opportunities. The Peacock backline was outstanding, led by Petrie, who finished with nine saves, improving to 5-4 on the year in net. Clifford drops to 5-3-2 in net for St. Cloud State after recording three saves in goal.

Up next for the Peacocks is a home date with the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs. Upper Iowa will host SMSU at Pattison Field next Friday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m on Homecoming Weekend before heading west to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on the USF Cougars on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
