RiverHawks Score in Overtime to Clip Peacocks

The Upper Iowa men's soccer team scored early to take the 1-0 lead, but Northeastern State answered in the first half, and won the game in overtime to defeat UIU 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Peacock men's soccer team ended their weekend with an overtime defeat at the hands of MIAA-foe Northeastern State University on Sunday afternoon in Fayette. Upper Iowa took the early lead, but the RiverHawks tied the score 1-1 before halftime. After a scoreless second frame, the teams went to overtime, where the visitors eventually scored to seal the victory. UIU suffers its first loss in MIAA play, dropping to 1-1, and now holds a 3-5 overall record. With the victory, NSU improves to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

It was an eventful first half at Pattison Field. The teams were even in almost every category, including shots (7-7) and saves (3-3). In the ninth minute, Peacock senior Fausto Ordenana gathered the ball off a corner kick and sent it through the back of the net for his second goal is as many games. Hugo Alves sent the perfect ball to his teammate, and Upper Iowa took the early lead. But Northeastern State was determined to answer. In the 21st minute, Jacob Weaver coralled the ball in the middle, and sent a perfect ball past UIU goalkeeper Connor Rortvedt from 25 yards out to tie the match, 1-1. NSU notched four straight shot attempts after the goal, but the Upper Iowa defense held. The Peacocks had an attempt just before halftime, but Chad Peterson missed wide, and the teams went to the intermission tied.

Both teams were able to get a plethora of shots off in the second frame. The visitors held a slight 13-10 advantage in shot attempts, but held a 10-4 lead in shots placed on goal. Despite both teams' offenses controlling the ball, it was the defense that held strong. Northeastern State did not allow the ball to get to their goalkeeper in the second half, as Ryan Davis did not register a save in the period. Rortvedt was outstanding in goal for UIU in the second half, tallying nine saves to keep the score tied at one going to the extra frame.

In the overtime period, both teams went back and forth taking shots. The RiverHawks had a shot saved by Rortvedt, but earned a corner in the process. In the 97th minute, Ben Watson sent a corner to the box, where Nikolai Solomon scored his second goal of the year, and gave the visitors a 2-1 victory.

For the match, NSU led in shot attempts (24-15) including a big lead in shots placed on goal (15-6). The teams each earned three corners on the afternoon. Davis earned five saves in goal for the RiverHawks, while Rortvedt netted 13 saves while taking the loss in the net for UIU.

The Peacocks will have six days off before their next match, when they wrap up their home stand with the Lindenwood Lions next Saturday, Oct. 1 at Pattison Field. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
