Box Score The Upper Iowa men's soccer team defeated the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene University on Saturday down in St. Charles, Mo in a matchup of former MIAA opponents. UIU dominated the game from start to finish, and even though they were unable to score in the first half, they score twice in a 90-second span in the second frame to put the match away. With the win, Upper Iowa improves to 2-4 on the season.
The first half was dominated by the Peacocks, despite UIU being unable to score. Upper Iowa held a major advantage in shots (13-0), and controlled the ball the entire half. The Peacocks were able to earn seven corners as well, but SNU held up solidly in the back end to keep the match scoreless going into the intermission.
The second stanza was a different story. UIU continued its dominance, outshooting the Crimson Storm 11-3, and holding a slight 4-3 advantage in corners earned. In the 67th minute,
Chad Peterson finally broke the scoring seal.
Blair Lyons sent him a pass and Peterson was able to corral it and score for his first goal of the season, and to put the Peacocks up 1-0. 90 second later, Upper Iowa was back at it. This time it was Lyons who scored on the assist from
Hugo Alves. Lyons now leads the team with three goals on the year.
Connor Rortvedt saw very little action in goal, facing just one shot. He did save that one shot and earned the win in the net. In all, the Peacocks dominated in shots (24-3) including a 12-1 advantage in shots placed on goal. UIU led 11-4 in corners earned as well.
The Peacocks will return to Fayette for their home opener of 2016 after wrapping up a three-week, six-game road trip to begin the season. Upper Iowa will take on Southwest Baptist University in the MIAA opener on Friday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. The Peacocks will then host MIAA-foe Northeastern State on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. Upper Iowa will begin their run as defending MIAA champions.
