After scoring three goals on Thursday night, the Upper Iowa men's soccer squad was unable to muster up any offense on Saturday afternoon against Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks defeated the Peacocks 1-0 behind a first-half goal. Despite UIU leading in shot attempts and corner kicks, the home team's defense held strong to preserve the shutout. With the loss, Upper Iowa drops to 1-3 on the season, while Humboldt State improves to 2-1 on the year.
In the 30th minute, HSU converted a corner from Max Steinmetz and Kory Gilmore played it to the mid and scored to give the home team the 1-0 lead. That was all the Lumberjacks needed. Upper Iowa had opportunities in the 15th, 16th, and 19th minutes, but all three times the Peacocks were denied by the HSU goalkeeper.
Blair Lyons,
Ryan Pinkerton and
Chad Peterson all had looks, but UIU was unable to convert. Upper Iowa led 6-3 in shots in the first 45 minutes, but trailed going to the intermission.
The Peacocks earned five more shots in the second half, including their best opportunity in the 78th minute. After a Humboldt State foul, the Peacocks earned a penalty kick, and Lyons had a chance. However, the PK was saved by Robert Quintero and the score remained 1-0. That proved to be the final opportunity for UIU and the home team held on for the shutout win.
In all, Upper Iowa held the advantage in shots (11-6) while each team placed six shots on goal. It was yet another physical game as five yellow cards were given, including two on UIU.
Connor Rortvedt suffers the loss in goal, and recorded three saves on the afternoon.
The Peacocks will fly on home to Fayette before getting back on the road next week.
