Box Score 2 The Peacocks (14-19, 10-12 NSIC) swept the first two games of their four-game series at Southwest Minnesota State University (4-25, 2-12 NSIC) on Saturday.
Anthony Calton had five hits on the day, while
Tyus Adkins picked up the complete game win in game one and
Zach Carstens continued his hot streak on the hill earning a second straight, complete game shutout.
After the 7-3 game one victory,
Zach Carstens pushed his scoreless innings streak to 16 with a second straight, complete game shutout as he scattered 5 hits over his 9 innings of work. Carstens has lowered his ERA by three runs over the last two starts and now carries a 4.71 earned run average. The senior righty rung up 12 Mustang batters with strikeouts after coming into the game with 21 k's in his first seven appearances of the season.
While Carstens and the defense held the Mustangs scoreless, Upper Iowa scored two runs in the third inning on a pair of hits and a SMSU error. Calton got an rbi when catcher's interference was called with the bases loaded and Greco plated the second run with a sac fly to center field. A double play ended the Peacock threat in the second. Neither team scratched the scoreboard for the remainder of the game as UIU took advantage of their opportunity in the third; the Peacocks outhit the Mustangs 7-5 in the second game.
In the first game, Upper Iowa jumped out to a 5-0 lead after an inning and a half in Marshall, Minn. with one run in the first and four in the second inning.
Cody Booker led off the game with a double and came home on a single to right by
Alex George. In the second, Calton singled through the left side with the bases loaded to plate two runs and
Colton Janssen also had a two-run single to center to score the third and fourth runs of the frame.
The Mustangs rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second with two outs, but a fly out to center ended the SMSU threat.
UIU added two more runs in the fourth inning when Janssen forced in a run on a grounder and George singled through the right side to add the Peacocks' final run.
SMSU threatened a comeback in the seventh inning, but the Peacocks only allowed one run and stranded two Mustangs on the bases for the win.
Tyus Adkins (4-3) picked up the complete game victory with 7 innings of work; the sophomore allowed 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out 6 batters. Calton went 3-3 at the plate, while George and
Jacob Greco each had two hits. Janssen posted 3 runs batted in while George had a pair of rbi.
The Peacocks and Mustangs will line up against each other on the diamond again on Sunday with a double header set to start at 12 p.m.
