Men's Soccer Wins Double Overtime Thriller

Upper Iowa 1 - Southwest Baptist 0 (2 OT). The Peacocks outshot their opponent 27-9, and finally converted in the 105th minute to sweep the weekend.

Box Score The Peacock men's soccer team earned a hard-fought, double-overtime victory on the road in Bolivar, Mo. on Saturday afternoon. Upper Iowa defeated MIAA-foe Southwest Baptist 1-0 in two overtimes to earn its first weekend sweep in MIAA play this season. Despite an overwhelming 27-9 lead in shot attempts, UIU could not convert the first 104 minutes. The offense finally broke through to  give the Peacocks their second winning streak of the year. With the win, the Peacocks improve to 6-8 overall, and 3-3 in MIAA play.

Upper Iowa held a 5-3 lead in shots in a physical first half. Both defenses held strong and neither team was able to gain an advantage. Peacock goalkeeper Connor Rortvedt was strong in goal behind the UIU backline, and kept the home team out of the scoring column. SBU's defense was just as strong, not letting the Peacocks gain many opportunities. The second half featured three shot attempts in the first four minutes for UIU, but Aaron Morgan had two shots saves, and Hugo Alves missed high to keep the match scoreless.

The Bearcats had an opportunity in the 65th minute, when Upper Iowa has called for a foul in the box. Jason Hasenohr took a penalty kick, but Rortvedt was up to the task, getting the save and keeping the game 0-0. The Peacocks held a major 13-4 lead in shot attempts, but could not convert, and the match went to overtime.

The visitors tallied seven more shot attempts, including two headers off of corners in the first overtime, but SBU's backline was outstanding, and the game was still scoreless. Upper Iowa found a way in the 105th minute in the second overtime, when Alves sent a corner kick to Blair  Lyons. Lyons gathered it in the box, and scored to give the Peacocks a 1-0 win. The UIU leader in goals added his seventh of the season to give the visitors the victory.

For the match, Upper Iowa led 27-9 in shots, including 8-3 in shots on goal. UIU led in corners earned (7-0) as well. Rortvedt tallied three saves in net and improved to 6-8 on the season.

The Peacocks will have a week off before heading to St. Charles, Mo. next Saturday, Oct. 29 to take on the No. 17 Lions of Lindenwood University. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. next weekend.
