The Peacock volleyball team ran into a buzz saw at the net Friday night in Fayette. Upper Iowa hosted the #6 Vikings of Augustana University to Dorman Gym for a Northern Sun Conference tilt. The Vikings swept the Peacocks 3-0 behind 9 team blocks and a 43-23 advantage in kills to improve to 18-2 overall and 9-1 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa fell to 9-10 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
Augustana posted wins by scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-9. The home team fell behind early in set one, 10-3, and were unable to recover as the visitors tallied 13 kills on offense and 4 blocks on defense to claim the 10-point win.
UIU got out to a quick 6-2 lead in set two and extended their lead to 14-8 midway through the frame;
Alisha VanderWoude paced the Peacocks with three kills during the second set. Augustana went on a 10-0 on the serve of Anna Sykora to rally and take an 18-14 lead. The Vikings continued to roll and earn a 25-20 victory heading into the intermission.
The Vikings controlled the third and final set with a .600 hitting performance thanks to 16 kills and just 1 attack error. The Peacocks trailed by three, 10-7, when their guests took off on a 15-2 run to close out the set and the match.
Augustana was led by Bailey Koch's 13 kills and 8 blocks, Anna Sykora's 35 assists and Brittany Cech's 18 digs.
Upper Iowa was led by
Kelsey Hinrichs, who recorded 13 digs and 5 kills, and
Alisha VanderWoude, who picked up 6 kills.
Malissa LeClaire notched 10 assists and
Carlee Ketchum added 8.
The Peacocks get right back onto Prochaska Court in Dorman Gymnasium on Saturday at 3 p.m. against the #9 Wildcats of Wayne State College.
