The Upper Iowa men's soccer improved to 2-0 on the season with a 1-0 victory over the Lewis Flyers on Sunday afternoon. The lone goal of the match was an own goal as a Lewis defender deflected a Peacock cross into his own net with just over 10 minutes remaining.
The Peacocks came out much stronger in this one than they did in their opening match on Friday, controlling the pace of play for first 10 minutes against Lewis. UIU nearly broke the game wide open when senior
Sebastian Smith came up from his center back position to control a ball in the middle of the offensive half. Smith ripped a shot from nearly 30 yards out that flew past the diving Flyer goalkeeper, but rang the right post and bounced back into the field of play.
Neither team had much of an opportunity throughout the remainder of what was a physical first half of soccer, with both teams emotions running high.
UIU again came out and controlled the ball for the first 20 minutes of the second half despite playing into a strong wind. Senior midfielder
Greg Marshall nearly scored his second goal of the season when he tried to chip the Flyer keeper from just outside the box in the opening minutes of the second half, but the visiting goalkeeper was up to the task.
Then, after playing well for nearly 80 minutes, the Peacocks finally got a break. Freshman midfielder
Dominic Boland worked the ball down the right side of the field with junior forward
Ryan Pinkerton that ended with Boland putting a cross into the box from the corner. A Flyer defender reached back with his foot and deflected the ball back towards his net where his unsuspecting keeper wasn't able to react in time and the ball bounced into the goal, giving the Peacocks a 1-0 lead.
Upper Iowa was able to control the game's final 10 minutes by dribbling the ball to the offensive corners and essentially run out the clock for the victory. Sophomore goalkeeper
Connor Rortvedt recorded five saves for his first clean sheet of the season. Smith led the team with three shots, while Marshall tallied two shots on the day.
Upper Iowa will now hit the road for nearly a month, embarking on a six-game road trip beginning in Lakewood, Colorado, when the Peacocks take on Adams State on Sept. 11 at 2:30 p.m. The next UIU home match will be on Oct. 3 when the Peacocks host the Lindenwood Lions.
