Box Score The Peacocks men's soccer team earned their third consecutive victory to start the season with a 3-0 win over Adams State on Friday afternoon in Lakewood, Colorado. UIU scored all three goals in the second half en route to the win, shutting out their opponent for the second straight game. Upper Iowa has now outscored their opponents 7-1 on the year and is receiving votes in the NSCAA national top 25 poll.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Peacocks put zero shots on goal, UIU broke through with a
Rhys Williams penalty kick nine minutes into the second half. Some fancy footwork from senior
Leandro Pena drew the foul in the box, setting up Williams' second goal of the season and second time that the Peacocks senior captain had converted a penalty kick opportunity to put Upper Iowa up 1-0.
Similar to the Wisconsin-Parkside match, the Williams goal sparked the Peacock offense leading to a
Greg Marshall goal. The senior midfielder scored his second goal of the year, making a clever run to the edge of the box where
Rafael Pedroso found him with on a smart a ball that Marshall was able to strike on a half-volley past a defender and the goalkeeper to put the Peacocks up 2-0.
Less than five minutes later, 2014 All-MIAA First Team forward
Ryan Pinkerton scored his first goal of the season, assisted by sophomore
Johnny McBeth. The attack started when Marshall worked the ball through the midfield and found Pinkerton forward. From there, the Peacock forward got the ball wide to McBeth, who slid it back to Pinkerton just within the six-yard box where he could finish with ease.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Connor Rortvedt earned his second clean sheet of the season and now has gone 200 minutes without surrendering a goal. Rortvedt made a season-high seven saves, one shy of his career-high of eight against Fort Hays State last season.
Upper Iowa will finish its Colorado trip with a match at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colorado, on Sunday, Sept. 13 at noon.
