Women's Soccer Earns 1-0 Win in Defensive Battle

Upper Iowa defeated Minnesota Duluth 1-0 with a late goal by Madie Edwards. The Peacocks are now undefeated over their last three games after starting the year 1-2-1.

The Upper Iowa women's soccer team battled to a 1-0 victory over the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. In a defensive clash, Madie Edwards was able to score the lone goal of the game late in the second half to give UIU its second straight victory and third consecutive match without a loss. The Peacocks win improved their overall record to 3-2-2 and 2-1-1 in conference play. Minnesota Duluth falls to 2-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NSIC.

The opening 45 minutes was a battle of wills as each side did their best to contain the opponent. UMD and UIU combined for just four total shots in the first half with each goalkeeper being forced to make one stop each.

About 20 minutes into the second half, UIU appeared to score the go-ahead goal, but it was called back as the Peacock forward was called offside. However, with just under 12 minutes left, Upper Iowa was finally able to break through. A perfect ball over the top of the Bulldog defense from Erin Svensson found the foot of Edwards, who scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season by poking the ball past the Bulldog goalkeeper and into the corner of the net.

UMD outshot the Peacocks 9-3 in the second half, but UIU senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Emanuel saved all four shots that the Bulldogs put on net, including a diving save to her left just moments after UIU had taken the 1-0 lead.

Upper Iowa only took three shots throughout the game, but all three were on target. Edwards, Maggie Olson and Brittany Beckman combined for one shot each.

Upper Iowa will travel to St. Cloud, Minn., for a match Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Huskies of St. Cloud State.
