Men's Soccer Stays Unblemished, Beats NSU for First Time Ever

Upper Iowa beat Northeastern State 1-0 for their first win against the RiverHawks in program history.

Box Score The Peacock men's soccer team made program history with a 1-0 victory over Northeastern State on Saturday. In UIU's fourth season of MIAA conference play, it marked the first time Upper Iowa had beaten the RiverHawks, who had won the first four games in the series between the two teams.

With both teams receiving votes in the NSCAA national poll coming into the game, UIU (7-0-1, 2-0 MIAA) will look to get into the top 25 after extending their program best start to the season. The loss drops Northeastern State to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The RiverHawks nearly got on the board in the 23rd minute when a NSU shot hit the crossbar. Shortly after, the Peacocks went on an offensive assault, taking four corner kicks and three shots in a span of three minutes, but the game remained scoreless after the first 45 minutes.

In the 74th minute, UIU scored the go-ahead and game-winning goal. Freshman Joaquin Alonso buried a rebound off of a header for his first career collegiate goal. Senior Sebastian Smith picked up his second assist of the season on the goal.

Upper Iowa withstood the RiverHawk attack over the final 16 minutes of the match, including two Connor Rortvedt saves in the final minutes of the game. Rortvedt earned his fourth shutout of the year by making a season-high eight saves.

The Peacocks were led offensively by Johnny McBeth, who took three shots, while Alonso, Blair Lyons and Gabriel Caetano had two each.

Upper Iowa will play Lindenwood University in their next match on Saturday, Oct. 3. It will be the Peacocks first home match in nearly a month, dating back to the second game of the year against Lewis.
