The Upper Iowa men's soccer team (6-0-1) continued their perfect start to the 2015 season by beating the Southwest Baptist Bearcats (0-7-0), 2-1, on Thursday afternoon. Junior
Ty Johnson scored the game-winning goal less than three minutes into overtime to give the Peacocks their sixth win of the year and seventh straight game without a loss to start the year.
After a scoreless first half that saw SBU outshoot the Peacocks 10-6, the Bearcats took a 1-0 lead early in the second half.
Ten minutes later, senior captain
Rhys Williams tied the game with a goal off a free kick. Over the final 25 minutes of the second half, the Peacocks put three shots on net to the Bearcats two, but neither team could capitalize.
However, UIU was able to make the most of an opportunity in the opening minutes of overtime as Johnson scored on the first shot in the extra period. The junior midfielder had a deflected ball bounce to him in the box and he beat the SBU goalkeeper.
Upper Iowa finish off their six-game road trip in Tahlequah, Okla., as they take on Northeastern State on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 12 p.m.
