The Peacocks men's soccer team kept their unblemished season intact with a 2-1 victory over the Union Bulldogs in Jackson, Tennessee on Sunday afternoon. UIU rallied with two second half goals to pick up the win, including a game-winning penalty shot in the final two minutes.
Upper Iowa was receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Poll heading into the weekend and with the win today, improved on the already program-best start at 5-0-1. Union fell to 2-4 with the loss.
In a first half that had 19 total shots, the Peacocks went into the halftime break down 1-0. Union outshot Upper Iowa 11-8 in the first half, capitalizing with a goal headed in by Andre Silva 14 minutes into the game.
But 22 minutes into the second half,
Greg Marshall scored his fifth goal of the year to tie the game at 1-1. The senior midfielder placed a shot into the upper corner of an empty net to even the game. Then, in the 89th minute, the Peacocks earned a penalty kick, their fourth of the season in six games. Senior captain
Rhys Williams converted the PK to give Upper Iowa the lead with a little over a minute remaining in the match.
The Peacocks will open the conference schedule next week as they travel to Bolivar, Missouri, and Tahlequah, Oklahoma, for a pair of MIAA against Southwest Baptist and Northeastern State. It will wrap up a six-game road trip that the Peacocks are 3-0-1 on so far.
