THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK BASEBALL… Upper Iowa will play six games this week against conference opponents in a mirror schedule of last week. The Peacocks will host a midweek double header against the University of Sioux Falls on Wednesday and then travel to Aberdeen, S.D. over the weekend to face Northern State University. All six games are Northern Sun Conference games. The Peacocks went 3-3 last week, but the UIU offense was on fire scoring 69 runs (11.5/game) against the University of Minnesota Duluth and Minot State University.
NSIC PLAYER OF THE WEEK... Jacob Greco, a redshirt freshman from Fayette, Iowa, hit .680 with 17 hits including 8 extra base hits last week for the Peacocks. UIU's centerfielder recorded 5 doubles and 3 homeruns while slugging a scintillating 1.240 for the week. Greco drove in a team high 16 baserunners while scoring 11 times.
"KUL" UNDER PRESSURE... Ross Kulick has earned seven saves this season setting a new single-season record for Upper Iowa. The old record of six saves was set in 1995 by Mando Santa Anna. Kulick now has an ERA of 1.74 with a 1-0 record. In his 10.1 innings on the bump, the redshirt freshman from DePere, Wis. has 8 strikeouts and opponents are batting .229 against the southpaw.
LOOKING BACK AT THE PEACOCKS' LAST WEEK... The Peacocks went 3-3 this past week with splits against Minnesota Duluth and Minot State. The team hit .377 and slugged .608 with 20 doubles, a triples and 9 homeruns. In addition to Greco's big week,
Mitch Moser hit .500 (9 hits, 2 2B, 2 HR, 10 RBI) and Jacob Stenberg hit .455 (10 hits, 4 2B, 4 RBI). In total, nine Peacocks hit over .300 for the week.
Mason Buster earned a win against Minot State holding the Beavers to two runs on five hits in his seven innings and
Shimpei Sato picked up a win against Minnesota Duluth with six innings on the mound allowing three runs on six hits.
Ross Kulick earned the save in UIU's first win on Saturday against Minot State. The save came as
Charley Cunningham picked up the third win of the week on the mound.
THE COUGARS ARE STREAKING… During their eight-game winning streak, USF has hit .349 as a team and outscored opponents, 77-to-44. USF has hammered eight HRs and pounded out 14 doubles in the run. In addition, the Cougars have compiled a .517 slugging percentage and a .443 on-base percentage. Perhaps most noteworthy for the Cougars has been the work on the mound. USF's young staff, jwith ust two seniors (
Henry Ojeda and
Eric Brothers) and two freshman starters, had wins from seven different pitchers with junior
Patrick Anderson of Virginia, Minn., putting together a 2-0 record. Overall, USF had a 4.94 ERA in the eight-game run, compared to 7.41 for the season. In that stretch, the Cougars compiled 46 strikeouts and only 26 walks in 62 innings. They allowed just 34 earned runs.
WOLVES WIN FOUR LAST WEEK… The Wolves went 4-2 on the conference week sweeping Bemidji State on Tuesday and splitting the series versus Southwest Minnesota State this weekend. Offensively, senior first baseman Riley Shintaffer went 9-19 (.474) with 8 runs scored, 2 doubles, a homerun and 7 RBI. On the pitching side, redshirt freshman Erick Cervenka came out of relief twice and pitched 7.1 scoreless. The right hander only gave up 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7.
