THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK BASEBALL… The Peacock baseball team will match up with the #16 Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato on Wednesday in Mankato, Minn. before returning home to Fayette for a four-game series against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University. The games at Robertson Woods Field on Saturday and Sunday will begin at noon each day.
SCOUTING THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS... No team in the league is hotter at the plate than the #16 Mavericks, who are coming off a 6-0 week with a pair of wins over Augustana and a four-game sweep of Bemidji State. MSU scored 106 runs last week averaging 17.67 runs/game thanks in large part to a record-setting 41-run effort against Bemidji State on Saturday. Southwest Minnesota State went 2-4 last week after a midweek split with Minnesota Duluth and a 1-3 weekend against #2 St. Cloud State; the Mustangs allowed 68 runs last week giving up 11.3 runs per game.
PEACOCK PREVIEW... Upper Iowa opened their week with a Wednesday sweep of Sioux Falls in Fayette, but lost all four games to Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D. over the weekend allowing 67 runs for the week. The offense hit .339 for the week and slugged .534 with 11 doubles, a triple and 8 homeruns, but the 50 runs UIU scored were not enough to earn more than their two wins.
Mitch Moser hit .560 for the week with 14 hits including 2 doubles to slug .640; the sophomore drove in 6 runs while scoring 7 times. Moser earned a win on the mound against Sioux Falls with 6 innings of work; he allowed 7 runs, 6 earned, on 12 hits while striking out 2.
Shimpei Sato earned a win against Sioux Falls with 7.1 innings on the mound allowing 3 runs, only 1 was earned, on 6 hits while striking out 8 batters. Greco continued his hot streak raising his season average to .397 thanks to a .526 average at the plate last week; he grabbed 10 hits including a pair of grand slams for a total of 14 rbi's and 7 runs scored. He also walked 7 times this week for an on-base percentage of .667.
TAKING AN OFFENSIVE STANCE... The Peacock batters have had a great first half two-thirds of the season. Upper Iowa is ranked in the top five of the NSIC in batting average (#4, .320), slugging (#5, .474), runs (#4, 242), hits (#4, 334), rbi's (#3, 218), total bases (#5, 495), at bats (#5, 1,044), walks (#4, 120), sac flies (#3, 17) and stolen bases (#2, 38). Eight Peacocks are hitting above .300 for the season, while six hitters have collected 30 or more hits including nine with homeruns.
