Dragons Drive in Eleven to Defeat Peacocks

Tiffin 11 - Upper Iowa 4. The Dragons racked up 20 hits and 11 runs while holding the Peacocks off the scoreboard until their final half inning at the plate.

The Peacocks couldn't stop the Dragons' offense on the second day of the Winning Inning Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.  Tiffin University put five runs on the board in the second inning and never looked back on the way to an 11-4 victory over Upper Iowa.  With the loss, UIU falls to 2-3 overall, while Tiffin improves to 3-4 on the year.

The Dragons scored their five runs in the second and added a run in the third and fourth innings to jump out to an early 7-0 lead.  Tiffin posted a pair of runs in the fifth inning and then added their final two runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run homerun by Alex McCurry.

Entering their final at bats in an 11-0 hole, the Peacocks opened the bottom of the ninth with four straight walks to scratch the scoreboard for the first time.  After a strikeout, a second bases loaded walk pushed the second UIU baserunner across the plate.  Colton Janssen followed the fifth walk of the inning with an rbi-single to drive in the third run and keep the bases full of Peacocks.  Luis Ravelo reached on a fielder's choice that drove in Dawson Jones from third for Upper Iowa's fourth and final run of the inning.  A grounder ended the game and the Peacock rally.

Kyle Montell earned the win for the Dragons with a complete game.  He allowed four runs on four hits, while walking eight and striking out eight Peacocks.

The Dragon bats had their way on the evening picking up 20 hits led by Nick Calandra's four hits and three hits apiece from Nick Hueneburg and Isaac Perry.

UIU's starter Garrison Becker went three innings allowing six runs, five were earned, while surrendering 11 hits and suffering the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year.  Matt Meulemans threw a pair of innings and allowed three runs on six hits, but posted four strikeouts.  Charley Cunningham closed out the group of Peacock pitchers on the day with four innings giving up a pair of run on three hits, while striking out four Dragons.

The Peacocks are back on the field tomorrow against Kentucky Wesleyan College at 3 p.m.
