Upper Iowa Game Notes || UIU 2015 Season Stats
THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK BASEBALL… After a three-week hiatus since their last time on the diamond, the Peacock baseball team will get back on the field in the sun and warmth of Clearwater, Fla. at the Winning Inning Invitational. Upper Iowa is scheduled for 10 games in 7 days with three double headers now on their slate. The team will face Mansfield and Tiffin three times, while locking up with Ohio Valley twice and Kentucky Wesleyan and Minnesota Crookston once apiece.
2015 OPENING WEEKEND... The Peacocks dropped the first two games of the season to Missouri Southern State University 4-3 and 6-0; both were nine inning games. UIU held a 3-0 lead heading to the seventh in game one, but the Lions scored two in the seventh and two in the eighth to win. The second double header was cancelled due to weather in Joplin, Mo. Eric Cottrel,
Luis Ravelo and
Alex George led the Peacocks at the plate with each batter tallying three hits. Ravelo had a double and a home run in his first two at bats picking up two rbi's and scoring once.
Mason Buster,
Zach Carstens and
Brett Fanning all picked up multiple innings for the Peacocks without allowing a run, while
Garrison Becker took the loss in game two despite allowing just one run in his five innings of work in his first start for Upper Iowa.
DISAPPEARING ACT… The Peacocks lost three games they expected to be playing in late February when an ice and snow storm drove through the southern Midwest. After losing the second two games of their opening series in Joplin, Mo., Upper Iowa figured that surely Memphis, Tenn. would be a go the next week. But a winter storm through the Volunteer State cancelled UIU's three-game series with the Magician's of LeMoyne-Owen College.
LAST YEAR IN CLEARWATER… The Peacocks went 4-5 in Clearwater last season. Upper Iowa dropped their first two games to #7 Grand Valley State (5-4, 11-3) and then split with Kentucky Wesleyan (W, 4-1, L, 6-3). UIU strung three wins together over Ohio Valley twice (11-4, 10-7) and one over Hillsdale (8-4). The Peacocks lost their final two games of the trip to Florida against Slippery Rock (14-9) and Northwood (13-6).
