THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK BASEBALL… Upper Iowa will play six games this week against conference opponents, but the first two at home against the University of Minnesota Duluth will be counted as non-conference games. The Peacocks and Bulldogs will meet in Duluth on Apr. 22 with the results of that double header going toward the NSIC standings. After UIU closes out a 10-game home stand on Tuesday with UMD, they will head north to Minot State University in Minot, N.D. for a four-game NSIC series with the Beavers on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 3-4. Both UIU and UMD won three games over the weekend, while Minot State split their four NSIC contests.
HOMETOWN COOKING... Redshirt freshman
Jacob Greco, a native of Fayette, had a productive weekend for the Peacocks at the plate and in centerfield. Greco hit .389 in four games with 7 hits including 3 doubles and a homerun to slug .722. Two doubles came in the sixth inning of game one on Saturday, while the homerun was the difference in game two's victory on Sunday. He drove in a team-high 8 runs; scored 5 times and stole both bases he attempted. In the field, Greco made a few dazzling catches in the gaps and at the wall to rob Golden Eagle batters of hits.
PEACOCK POWER SUPPLY... The Peacocks took three of four from the University of Minnesota Crookston this past weekend splitting on day one (15-8, 4-5) and sweeping day two (9-5, 8-6). One starter (
Charley Cunningham) and a pair of relievers (
Blake Seehusen and
Mason Buster) earned wins for the Peacocks this past weekend, while the pitching staff posted an ERA of 4.78 in 32 innings on the mound surrendering 17 earned runs on 31 hits while striking out 24 Golden Eagles. At the plate, Upper Iowa hit .336 for the weekend led by
Adam Budron (7-10, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 2 R),
Alex George (9-16, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R), Greco,
Luis Ravelo (5-14, 1 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 6 R). The team hit .336 as a group with 18 extra base hits including 11 doubles, 2 triples and 5 homeruns;
Mitch Moser belted his first two collegiate homeruns in the 5-4 loss in game two.
HIGH FIVE... The Peacocks are now 10-0 this season when scoring at least five runs in a game and 0-10 in games where the team scores 4 or less. Upper Iowa has scored in double figures five times in 2015 and is averaging 6.1 runs per game. While UIU is outscoring their opponents 25-18 in the first inning, the team is getting in trouble in the second to the tune of a 22-9 disadvantage in runs.
