THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASEBALL… The Peacocks welcome the Huskies of St. Cloud State University. Upper Iowa went 7-3 in their ten games in seven days in Clearwater, Fla., while St. Cloud State has posted a 16-0 mark this season including an 11-0 record during their spring break trip to Arizona. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but the four-game series was moved up a day to Friday and Saturday so the teams could avoid cold temperatures on Sunday.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES... The Huskies are ranked #5 in the latest NCBWA and #21 in the Baseball News Poll. Mike Jurgella enjoyed a solid week in Arizona as he helped lead the Huskies from his catcher position. Jurgella batted .667 with 18 hits, five doubles, one homer, seven RBI and 10 runs scored. He also had 26 putouts and three assists with no errors on defense. Sheldon Miks pitched a complete game victory over Arizona Chrtistian on March 9. He allowed eight hits and one run in the game, which SCSU won 6-1. He also had four strikeouts in the game. Over the week, Miks made two other appearances in wins over Bemidji State and Minot. His week's ERA was 0.87 with 10.1 innings of work and six strikeouts and just eight hits allowed.
QUICK LOOK BACK TO CLEARWATER... The Peacocks went 7-3 on their trip to Clearwater, Fla. and are currently riding a five-game win streak. UIU hit .336 as a team and slugged .427 with 21 doubles, 4 triples and a homerun. The team was led by
Eric Cottrell, Jacob Stenberg and
Alex George at the plate, while
Ross Kulick earned a win and four saves on the trip, while several other Peacocks earned wins on the bump including two by
Cody Heiman. Upper Iowa posted wins over Mansfield (2), Tiffin (2), Ohio Valley (2) and Minnesota Crookston, while their three losses came to Mansfield, Tiffin and Kentucky Wesleyan.
SHOWING "COTTRELL" AT THE PLATE… Peacock senior
Eric Cottrell has been the Peacock leader at the plate this season spending time in left field and at first base in all 12 of UIU's games. The Hartland, Wis. native has posted a batting average of .477 (5th NSIC), a slugging percentage of .614 (17th NSIC) and an on-base percentage of .556 (2nd NSIC). He has 21 hits (7th NSIC) including 6 doubles (4th NSIC) and has been walked 8 times (9th NSIC).
RAVELO GETS IT ROLLING... Sophomore shortstop
Luis Ravelo has had a great start to his second season with the Peacocks. His three triples are tied for the best mark in the NSIC, while he is 6th in the league in walks (9), 7th in on-base percentage (.517), 13th in slugging percentage (.652) and 14th in hits (18).
BLOOMING IN RIGHTFIELD... Bloomington, Minn. product
Alex George has started all 12 games in right field for the Peacocks with a batting average of .392 at the plate. His .604 slugging percentage is 18th best in the NSIC, while his 19 hits are ranked 12th and his 8 doubles are tied for the most in the league.
CLOSING THE DOOR... Redshirt freshman
Ross Kulick has taken control of the closer duties for Upper Iowa with a 1-0 record and 4 saves (1st NSIC). The DePere, Wis. native has an ERA of 2.57 in his six appearances.
