THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK WRESTLING… Upper Iowa wraps up their final week of the regular season this week with a pair of heavy-hitting duals. The Peacocks will head to Sioux Falls, S.D. on Thursday, Feb. 12, for a dual against the Vikings of Augustana College before returning to Dorman Gym for a final NSIC-dual against the #1 Huskies of St. Cloud State University. The wrestling program will recognize their senior class prior to the dual with SCSU and will also host youth duals prior to and during the home match on Sunday. The Peacocks have been dominant since rallying from a twelve-point deficit on the road at Minnesota State University Moorhead in the team's Northern Sun Conference opener. Since trailing 18-6 with three matches to go against the Dragons, UIU has won 46 of 53 bouts including 24 bonus-point wins with seventeen coming by fall, two by tech fall and five by major decision. The Peacocks have outscored their last four opponents 194-28 to remain undefeated (6-0) in the NSIC.
PEACOCKS IN THE POLLS... Upper Iowa is currently ranked 10th in the NWCA Top 20 Poll for the second straight time. The Peacocks have two individuals ranked in the top 8 in the nation at their respective weights. The ranked Peacocks are
Jordan Rinken (157, #4) and
Blake Sorensen (184, #5).
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS... The Vikings were in action this past weekend traveling to Minot, N.D. to wrestle against Minot State, whom they defeated, 38-9, thanks to eight bout victories, including three pins on Saturday. Augustana then traveled to Bismarck, N.D. on Sunday to take on U-Mary. The Vikings dominated with a 40-6 win taking nine of the ten bouts against the Marauders. Augie is receiving votes in the latest NWCA poll after being ranked #17 in the last poll. The Vikings are led by a trio of ranked wrestlers including T.J. North (125, #1), Jeremiah Peterson (141, #4) and Jayd Docken (197, #5).
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES... The Huskies, along with the Peacocks and Vikings, sit atop the NSIC standings as one of the three undefeated NSIC teams left this season. SCSU is the nation's #1 ranked team and has posted a 14-2 overall record with their two losses coming in a three-point decision to #4 Ouachita Baptist (22-19) and a two-point decision to #2 Maryville (18-16). Five Huskies are ranked including Mike Rhone (133), Josh Howk (149), Clint Poster (157), Gabe Fogarty (165) and Austin Georgen (285). UIU dropped the final match of the NWCA National Duals to St. Cloud State, 26-6, this past January.
GOING FOR THE BONUS... This season officials have raised Upper Iowa wrestler's hands 436 times at the end of matches. The Peacocks are claiming victories in 59.9% of their matches. More impressive is the ratio of bonus-point wins for Upper Iowa so far this campaign. The Peacocks have recorded 191 wins by fall, 15 by technical fall and 44 by major decision. The 250 bonus-point wins leave Upper Iowa with 164 wins by decision and 22 wins by forfeit, medical forfeit or injury default. UIU is scoring bonus points in 57.3% of their victories this season.
