Upper Iowa used nine victories including six bonus-point victories to secure a 44-6 win over Minot State University in Fayette on Sunday. The Peacocks got five wins by fall and a win by tech fall, while losing only one match by fall on the afternoon. With the win, the Peacocks improve to 10-2 overall this season and 5-0 in the NSIC.
Chris Paulus opened the dual with a 16-0 tech fall victory (6:09) at 125 pounds thanks to three takedowns and ten points in four separate near falls.
Matt Paulus followed his brother's win at 133 and scored a win by fall (1:55) after a takedown led to a pin.
The Beavers got their win at 141 pounds when Tanner Crissler came out of a scramble on top and drove
Jordan Roths shoulders into the mat for the win. Roths was ahead 4-3 at the time of the takedown and pin by Crissler.
Trevor Duke got the home team back into the win column at 149 pounds with a 9-2 decision thanks to three takedowns by the UIU senior. Leading 14-6, Upper Iowa put the dual out of reach with four straight wins by fall from 157 to 184 pounds.
Jordan Rinken (2:52),
Colbey Vance (2:41),
Dalton Westerlund (5:17) and
Blake Sorensen (4:43) all posted wins by fall without surrendering a takedown. During the four matches, Minot State only scored a pair of escapes while Upper Iowa pushed their lead from 8 to 32, 38-6.
Ricky Briggs scored a pair of takedowns and added two escapes on the way to a 6-3 decision at 197, while
Logan Hopp used four takedowns and an escape to earn a 9-7 win at heavyweight and set the final score at 44-6.
UIU claimed a 19-3 advantage in takedowns and a 7-0 advantage in nearfalls during their dominating performance.
The Peacocks have just one dual next week. The team will visit Minnesota State University, Mankato on Thursday night, Feb. 5. The Peacocks and Mavericks will begin their match at 7 p.m.
